My name is Evan, I am a huge British comedy fan, and I am a constant, evolving advocate of music. Classical music is my specialty, but I believe music crosses much more than disciplines, and I encourage that mindset in my teaching. I recently received my Master's degree from McGill University in Vocal Performance; while there, I was fortunate enough to work professionally through the Opera de Montreal and through the Opera America conference held in Montreal this past year. Simple breathing techniques, Hal Leonard's Vocal Warmups, is a good book I use for beginners levelsand other techniques will be taught to my beginners. We will discuss each student's goals and what they hope to accomplish in their classes. I will ask each student to sing a couple of notes and songs that I have prepared in order to assess their vocal range (alto, soprano, etc.). With the song of your choice, we will go over tone, vowel placements, translations, and performance enhancers (supporting additional sound, staging, etc.) to make the song your own and better than you have performed before. I am a relaxed and easy-going teacher. I am good at staying focused but also fun to be around! I know that learning to play an instrument carries a unique set of challenges for each person, and these can be frustrating. Because I've experienced these challenges myself, my primary goal is to be there for my students, guiding them through the difficult moments as well as the joyful. I care about the student's progress more than sticking to a pre-determined rule book. Read More

For my young, beginning students, I have used Faber Piano Adventures. I find that the repetition with fingering and technique is essential for aspiring artists. As the students progress, I continue to use the same method as well as bringing in solo repertoire, especially as it pertains to performance and preparing students for NFMC testing. For voice, I always find out what the student is interested in, especially for adult students. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to the 1990s when I had my first guitar and piano students. I meet people "where they are." By that I mean that I see where the student is coming from, and bridge a link to a higher level of creative evolution that encompasses both technique and original thinking. I have had students video my lessons and post them online. I work with students on skills like improvisation, and co-writing. Read More
