For beginners on string instruments , I start with teaching them the major scale in the key of G, and then progressing to beginner songs. After a few songs are mastered, I ask each student to propose a song theyd like to learn based on their individual taste. For percussion, I focus on fundamentals such as proper sticking techniques and rudiments. I always take my students interests into account that is appropriate for their voice while solidifying good technique. However, it is equally important to be a good listener. I put a major emphasis on aural skill improvement because sight-reading using solfge syllables and rhythm exercises will bring students to the next step in their musicianship and make them more independent learners.
