Clarinet: Any beginning band method book, Baermann, Klose, Voxman. At advanced levels I will use appropriate repertoire and advanced method books tailored to the student. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. In our lessons we will focus on the fundamentals, then the music, and having a little fun at the end. Progress might be slow or we might be able to jump to more advanced music in the first month of meeting but I understand that every student is different and will progress at their own pace and I will do my best to help guide them. For Band students I normally use the method used in class or I will use the Ed Suede Band method. I like this method because it starts out very basically and simply and gradually increases in difficulty. Voice students must first pass an Audiation test which is essentially a test of their sense of pitch. From there I begin with vocalizations followed by singing materials. For beginning students, I emphasize fundamentals, including technique, sound quality, and reading. With children, I like to start with method books such as Essential Elements or the John Thompson series for piano. For more advanced pupils, I will start with what they are currently working on, find areas for improvement, and then adjust the curriculum accordingly.
