For my youngest students I start with a method book as I think the structure and step by step progress are very helpful. For teens and adults book recommendations are based on each students needs. I let the students guide me with the kinds of music they will really enjoy playing, but I will use the music they like to teach theory, song writing, and other aspects of music. My students don't just learn how to play songs, they learn why music works through the songs they like. Read More

The methods which I primarily use are the Piano Adventures and Alfred piano methods. I like them because they present the material in a logical, fun, and attractive way. I also supplement the method books with music that is tailored to each individual student. I am open to other methods if the student requests. For example, if a transfer student has been working in a different method, I am open to continuing in that method unless I feel that it does not mesh well with my own teaching styles and methods. Kathleen utilizes the Suzuki, Galamian, and Flesch method systems, as well as integrating music theory and aural skills into every lesson. When teaching classical violin and piano, she emphasizes listening skills and applied theory to help develop strong sight-reading skills. In fiddle lessons, she creates practice videos and audio files for students to practice along with in between lessons, incorporating use of the metronome to increase speed and rhythmic stability. I feel that, like my piano teachers always said, practice does in fact make perfet. It's amazing what can happen with even a 1/2 hour every other day when it comes to weekly lessons. I tend to assign more, but my point is that it's extremely important to practice! Also, what helped students the most - across the board - was theory workbooks, especially when it came to composition. Getting students interested in composing lends way to their completion rate when it came to homework too! Read More

I am a passionate performer who pushes students to not only do their best, but also to learn the history and theory behind their pieces and have fun while doing so. As a cellist, I have performed with the Bellevue Youth Symphony, Sammamish Symphony, Waynesboro Symphony, and Washington State University chamber groups. I have also been a concert soloist and a concerto competition finalist on multiple occasions for recital and solo works. Read More
