I began to teach in 2015 in China. My teaching experiences include beginners, intermediate, advanced students, and professional piano students, in all kinds of age levels. Some of my students received prizes and passed the piano examination in different levels such as ABRSM. Besides, I also have some adult students who wish to build up piano techniques and music theory in order to play pop songs and composition. I don't believe in a one size fits all mentality for music education, I've often seen this approach derail students from enjoying the process and eventually terminating their relationship with music overall. Students are a case-by-case basis, and in that regard, each lesson is catered to the students actual goals and interests. I believe in training our ears and our sense of rhythm to a point where the student can figure things out and make artistic decisions on their own and use lessons, less as a tutorial, but as a source of inspiration to pursue the things that brought them here in the first place. I started performing in my high school orchestra as the pianist, and had friends that wanted to learn to play. That was my first experience at teaching. I taught for the next eight years part time in Texas while I was majoring in Piano Performance and Theory. For the next 25 years, while I was working at my professional job, I kept teaching piano part time just because I loved the joy it brought to me and my students. Read More

For beginning and intermediate students I utilize the Bastien Method books series, which includes supplemental Theory and Technique books that can be purchased if needed.  These students each select performance pieces which they enjoy and are level-appropriate from a variety of sources. More advanced students focus primarily on challenging performance pieces, several of which are selected as 'keepers' for practice and review.  Lessons include technique practice (scales, arpeggios, finger exercises), theory (from textbooks, flashcards etc.) music history, instrument mechanics, ear training and musicianship (such as rhythm and sight reading drills, dictation) and student compositions (notation and continuation methods). I am someone who is passionate about music and loves working with students and seeing that passion grow in them as well. I have been playing the piano for 26 years and have learned many different styles, from classical to jazz to improv playing in different bands across the U.S. I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Piano Performance minor.
