During my 14 years of music teaching experience, I have worked with students as a public school music teacher, a studio private lesson teacher for piano, voice, oboe, flute, clarinet and saxophone. I've started studio programs for music theory, group piano, preschool music and musical theater. I've worked with students of all ages and experience levels who have a wide range of musical goals. Because I have a background in Kodaly and Orff instructional methods as well as advanced knowledge of musical theory, composition, music history and recording arts, I incorporate these elements within my instruction as students learn a piece of music. For beginning students, I typically start them with learning the notes, staff, beats, etc. Once the student has mastered those abilities, I begin to introduce playing "by ear" as I like to call it. This process involves the student choosing the song and learning how to play it solely by listening to it and figuring out the chords. If the student is looking to fulfill a career or perform at a competition as a piano player, then I also take the time to focus on the best practices to get them up to par with what they need for the career/competition. Instruments: Clarinet, Music
I personally believe in going as per the pace of the student. A progressive pace is important as well as a balance of not moving too quickly or too slowly for the students. Having fun learning music is also important to me. I like to encourage students to practice and I also implement ways to assist with making practice time more fun. The goal of music is for the student to enjoy what they are learning so that they will continue their lessons and look forward to lessons, not to feel high pressure and turn away from music altogether.
