I focus on the student's preferred genre and songs, and I make theory work for those particular songs; i.e. I find common chord progressions, their related scales, and have students improvise using those scales [though I emphasize chord tones, syncopation and more ... equally, not just scales]). For beginning students I usually start with basic chord formation to get them into playing songs as soon as possible so they dont get bored with the basics. Then I move onto movable chords, scales, and music theory. Once they get to more advanced techniques I will give them simple exercises and the songs they choose to learn will put them into context. I believe in training students both as instrumentalists and as overall musicians. Thus, beginning cello students will start with the Suzuki method to get basic technique down. Then, as a student improves, solo repertoire will be introduced from both the Suzuki method and other sources. Once a student has reached a state of proficiency, I will cater my teaching instead to the style that the student prefers. We can continue in classical music, or transition to contemporary styles.
