I encourage my students, whether private or the ones that I teach a school to practice on a consistent basis (have a consistent schedule for practice) because it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument or their voice. I've also found that a combination of different musical genres helps to motivate a student and allow them to have fun. I also encourage my students to enter competitions and recitals to give them a way of measuring where they are in comparison to others. Read More

Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation.
