I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly. I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie. I believe in fundamental/conceptual and competency-based teaching. These fundaments, or "basics" can be taught through any methodology. Because I have experience teaching with many different types of method books, I will generally teach out of the method books that are the top preference of the band program in which the student is enrolled. Beyond the curriculum preferred by the band program in which the student is enrolled, I will determine which solos and/or methods are appropriate for each individual student based on their level of performance, the needs of the student, and the interests of the student. Each student is an individual and learns in a different way. Although I usually use the same or similar materials, I teach them differently to each student. My goal as a teacher is to help my students advance their musical abilities and have fun making music, so the students' goals will guide the direction of the lessons.
