I am a passionate music educator with 24 years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching private lessons with all age groups and ability levels, I have taught advanced band, beginning band, orchestra, jazz band, marching band, and chamber winds.. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Clarinet Performance from Florida State University, a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Florida State University, a Master's degree in Music Education from Arizona State University, and a PhD in Music Education from Florida State University.
As a performer who was selected for All-State every year and performed as principal clarinet with the Jacksonville Youth Symphony Orchestra, I began teaching private lessons while I was still in high school. After high school, I attended Florida State University, where I performed as a soloist with the graduate Wind Orchestra at the Florida Music Educator's Conference in Tampa, performed with the Wind Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was principal clainet with the Florida Intercollegiate Band for two consecutive years. After leaving Florida State University, I traveled to Arizona to obtain my Master's Degree at Arizona State University. Here, I received full in and out of state tuition and was principal clarinet with the graduate Wind Sympony and the University Symphony Orchestra. While I was finishing my Master's Degree, I began teaching band and orchestra at an Elementary School, a Middle School, and then a High School. I enjoyed teaching so much, I continued for ten years, teaching instrumental music, private lessons, and performing. I then obtained my PhD and have been teaching instrumental music (band/orchestra) at the College/University level for the past 8 years. Currently, I teach aspiring music teachers how to teach.
I believe in fundamental/conceptual and competency-based teaching. These fundaments, or "basics" can be taught through any methodology. Because I have experience teaching with many different types of method books, I will generally teach out of the method books that are the top preference of the band program in which the student is enrolled. Beyond the curriculum preferred by the band program in which the student is enrolled, I will determine which solos and/or methods are appropriate for each individual student based on their level of performance, the needs of the student, and the interests of the student. Most students will learn scales, long tones, breathing exercises, etudes, and solos, unless this is not what the student nor parent wants. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own material or suggestions to each lesson.
I believe that anyone can succeed at a musical instrument and that hard work will always overcome natural talent. Each student has different needs. As a teacher, it is my job to first determine what those needs and wants are, then to determine what motivates the student, to devise a teaching strategy to meet those needs, and finally, to constantly encourage and support each student along the way. Some students strive to be the best at what they do; I will push students to achieve this. Other students, however, wish to play purely for the enjoyment of making music. I am capable of providing an intense or a laid-back teaching style, depending on the needs and wants of each student.
