I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. The Rubank Method offers some solos, but in addition, for the High School student I teach them the Weber Concertino, Mozart Concerto- first movement, Brahms Second Sonata for the advanced High School and College student. For beginning improvisers, I rely solely on my own materials and exercises, which emphasize the bebop scale and short ii-V licks and help develop understanding of key centers and 7-3 resolutions. For intermediate students as well, these concepts are essential to development as an improviser. For saxophonists, I begin with scalar studies and stress the importance of tone developing exercises such as overtones and long tones, but quickly introduce manageable repetoire. Read More
