I started teaching guitar at about 16, and have always maintained a studio of at least a couple students. I also offered assistance in the local band classes in order to improve my chops on my alternate instruments. I've played with several local bands, played musicals for local and regional theater groups, and was the house band leader for the Williamsburg Dinner Theater for 4 years. By my best estimation, I have played well over 1000 shows (probably closer to 1200), and that number continues to grow as I develop my band, the Darrell Boger Band. Read More

I started teaching four years ago as a freshman in college. I have had a number of students over the years and have developed my own music curriculum. The reason learning an instrument is often so frustrating is because no one takes the time to teach a student the underlying logic of music. While I'm very new at teaching music, I have many years of experience in teaching in general. I've been pretty successful as a private math tutor since 2009, and more recently I've also been tutoring in ACT prep, SAT, prep, and C++. I'm very glad to be transitioning to music, since that is a topic I'm very passionate about. I love so many things about teaching, and I can't wait to see how they transfer to music lessons. Hello future students! I much enjoy sharing my experience as a creative musician to my students whether they are 5 or 55, beginner or advanced. I am a patient teacher and do my best to encourage each student to find themselves as unique learners (musicians) unto themselves. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 with a BA focus on Music Composition. While recently living in NYC, I formed a 12-member saxophone orchestra, composed and recorded two symphonies, performed and recorded with the late Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Ensemble, and provided live Sound Design for renowned poetess Anne Carson. Instruments: Bass Guitar, Double Bass, French Horn
Depending on a student's interests, I could start with several books like Rufus Reid's Evolving Bassist (for all-around bass playing). If reading skills are a main goal of a student's focus, I use repertoire from the standard canon and IMSLP. I feel that improvisation is an often overlooked key to self-expression and mastery of one's instrument, so I introduce concepts used in making up solos and some theory as soon as possible. Read More
