I have a student centered approach to teaching music with research based methods supported by, not only my own experience, but experts in all fields of learning. From a young age I have been an active teacher. Advanced for my age I vividly remember tutoring my classmates in the Fourth grade. Throughout the rest of my schooling I served in some sort of volunteer tutor capacity, helping classmates and younger students. While in undergrad at DePauw University I served as an Orientation/First-Year Seminar Mentor, helping first year students adjust to campus academic and social life. The first lesson is both an assessment and an opportunity for my student and I to get to know each other. Based on the student's level, personality, instrument, and interests I have a variety of ideas about beginning methods. Either way, most of my students do focus on scales, exercises, and songs. My philosophy is to teach the student, not JUST the music. Also, I believe in "comprehensive" musicians-ones that can perform, understand, write, and create. Read More
