The viola is very similar to the violin, but is in fact slightly larger in order to have a lower range. It has a mellow, dark tone that is robust and sonorous. The viola enjoys a prominent role in the orchestra and was used to great effect by Mozart is his six string quintets

Age to Begin Viola Lessons

Students may begin lessons on the Viola at a very early age; we recommend the student be approximately 5 years or older. Different size instruments are available for children if necessary. The viola has the same playing position and apparent size as the violin, but it is indeed bigger and is more physically demanding.

Procuring an Instrument

For younger students who require a small size viola, renting may be the best option available. Many new student models are also available from many music stores. When it comes to purchasing a high quality instrument, the experience gained from speaking to a professional Viola teacher would be invaluable.
