I am a classically trained pianist and violinist from Memphis, Tennessee. My first piano lessons were at the age of 6. I began my violin studies at age 10, and have been playing for 16 years. I have studied violin with Chun-Yu Chen, Joy Brown Wiener (concertmaster emeritus of the Memphis Symphony), and Domenic Salerni (first violin, Dali String Quartet). I usually encourage my students to read music, but for the youngest students I start by playing with them and having them copy me. Once they are ready, I start teaching them basic music theory that will help them read music. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead. I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play.
