My teaching experience dates back to my senior year of high school 10 years ago. My mother is a teacher, and got me my first job tutoring math for one of her teacher's assistants. During the first couple of years, I had a number of math and music students and learned the benefit of tailoring my teaching methods to the individual rather than using a one size fits all teaching approach. I try to listen to the student's interests and skills so that I can develop a practice routine that is both fun and beneficial for them specifically. I also have found that the best teachers that I have had, exposed me to music that I would have never discovered on my own. I believe that students should both enjoy their lessons and their practice. I also firmly encourage them to perform and create their own original projects so that they are really experiencing and benefiting from their newly learned strengths. Read More

I typically use the Faber method books for my piano students, as I feel they are pedagogically sound and have supplemental material to support both beginner and intermediate levels. For those students who are more advanced, I tend to select classical repertoire that matches or challenges individual techniques and abilities. My voice students spend their lessons working on vocalises and sight singing, and then we work on repertoire ranging from folk songs, art songs, and musical theater. Read More

I always ask the student to find music that they like listening to, and I work this into the material they are learning. Even if the instrument they play is not a part of that music, listening to music critically will help them develop a concept for sound and an ear for musicality. I try my hardest to keep the lessons both fun and engaging - I'm always open to questions! Read More

Experience has led me to instead encourage my students to listen to recordings of themselves and others after they finish learning their music, so they have a chance to develop their own ideas of the piece first. In New Zealand I learned to play on Hamburg Steinways, instruments that need care to make a full, round sound when playing loud. This helped me to form and teach a technique grounded in efficient use of arm weight versus muscle. Read More

I have been teaching students since the age of fifteen, accommodating every age between four and sixty-five. I have maintained a private studio for the past five years, before which I taught at the Florida State Summer Music Festival for intermediate and advanced pianists, delivering practice coaching, masterclasses, applied lessons, and lectures. I have taught group classes at Indiana University at every level the university offers, from complete adult beginners to graduate music majors. Read More
