For beginning students I really tried to start with some basic music theory example for the notes of the piano I would have them get one of the learning time piano books and have them fill in each note of where they correlate. For example if I were to teach someone again the C major scale. I would start by telling them the notes in the scale and then have them repeat to me what I just taught them once they got the notes down and they know where they are on the piano I can teach them the proper hand positions to play the scale. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a select list of guided lesson books (depending on skill level and musical interests). Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
