I think that it is extremely important that students learn to read the notes from the staff and correlate staff reading with the notes on the piano. For young beginners, I generally teach from the Nancy and Randall Faber Piano Adventure series, however I have recently been working to become more familiar with other options in order to best accomodate individual students. I am now also familiar with Alfred's Piano Method books, as well as the Hal Leonard series for young students. I have also taught by books from the same composers for an older beginner. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I began teaching piano eight years ago, and have been teaching ever since then. I urge students to practice regularly. My students learn classical music, but also venture out to some pop once they reach the intermediate level. I do my best to create a fun learning environment, while still being a strict enough teacher to push them.
