There are typically three books that I like to start children off with which include Piano Party, Music for Little Mozart’s, and My First Piano Adventure which are designed for children ages 4-11 years old. These books help children to understand the basics of rhythm, music theory, and activities associated with the two. I generally like to begin my teenage to adult students with the All in One Adult Course series which consists of three levels from easy to beginner intermediate and also combines a mixture of classical and modern music. I also have experience as a music director for a theater company, a counselor for summer camps, a music teacher for preschool and elementary schools, a volunteer for several organizations, as well as being a private piano and voice lesson teacher. I have an easy going personality and like to have fun so I try to make my lessons feel the same way. I'm not overly harsh or judgmental but instead I try to make each lesson a true learning experience where there's no pressure and the student is free to make mistakes (even encouraged to take risk and make mistakes) in pursuit of their passion of music. Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. More than having students be able to perform technically, I want students to have an understanding of music and their instrument intimately, from their own awareness, rather than rote explanation or practice.
