Piano lessons should be about the student (at any level) forming a healthy relationship with the piano. As such, my mission is to create musicians that perform with Honesty and Clarity. Clarity forms all the "technical" aspects of making music at piano, while Honesty is about getting in touch with how we are personally developing as musicians and how we can be mentally present with the music we are creating--and not trying to be anyone else besides are true selves. Every student learns a different way and I always take the first lesson to evaluate what the student is passionate about. Some students want to get straight to playing songs and some want to learn sheet music first. I am comfortable with starting anyway they need. If the student starts to get bored after a few lessons I try and bring in new toys related to the instrument such as a new kind of cymbal or a slide guitar to try and spark some inspiration again! I feel it is important to address each students learning style on an individual level. For young children and beginner's, I pull from resources that encourage basic fundamentals, not inclusive or limited to, Bastein, Alfred, Faber & Faber, and Hal Leonard. According to one's ability and interest, Hanon, Sonatina's Sonata's, familiar and classic's, are encouraged.
