Using either The Music Tree or My First Piano Adventures, I teach children about the elements of music and how to appreciate music, before going into actual technical work on the piano. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction. I also encourage performances and for those, I let students choose works (classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, or pop) based on skill level and personal interest.
