I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance. My students thrive on goal setting. From the very first lesson, we work together to set clear, meaningful objectives that guide our learning journey. We revisit these goals regularly, tracking progress and adjusting as needed to keep students motivated and on track. I tailor my approach to each individual, recognizing that every student learns differently. Accomplishments, whether big breakthroughs or small wins, are celebrated, as each is a step toward the overall goal and a reason to feel proud. Read More

I began teaching shortly before I graduated high school in 2012. My high school had a very successful marching band program and was closely tied with a local drum corps, which helped me become experienced in leading group rehearsals and clinics for drumlines and front ensembles around this time. Leading in to college, I continued this and also began teaching students individually which only helped to underline my love of teaching! Read More

I start with pushing students to develop good habits early on in their playing. I like to get my students playing songs in their genre of choice as soon as possible. This method generates interest in their instrument from the very begining. I select their repetoire based on what techniques we are currently working on and find songs that will force them to develop those techniques in order for them to effectively perform each piece. Using a tried-and-true approach, I like to teach each student the basics of musicianship in a step-by-step method. Each new concept builds on the previous one. Each student learns a bit differently, that is the wonderful thing about being an individual! I fell that I am able to tap into a student's learning stlye from the first lesson, and find areas that need to be strengthened. This carries over into all areas of learning. Read More

I like piano lessons to be enjoyable while still providing an atmosphere of learning. Exactly how a lesson unfolds varies from student to student in order to fit the needs and desires of each individual student. Each student and I will determine what pace works best for that student. We will also work together to determine how to construct our lessons so we can introduce new information in ways that best help that particular student understand the concepts. Read More

I was my own first student. I began teaching myself how to play the piano over 10 years ago. Throughout this process I learned how to approach some typically confusing topics in much more digestible ways. A benefit to starting out as a self taught musician is that I had to learn how to make sense of things myself rather than memorizing information that a teacher fed me. A main focus of mine as a teacher is encouraging regular practice routines where the student can solidify the information we discuss in our lessons as well as uncover new questions they may have about the subject.
