It begins with note reading which I feel is one of the most important parts of beginner piano playing. The book includes a play-along cd that I use for rhythm practice during lessons to clap and count, because having a steady rhythm is the second most important aspect of playing the piano. I have taught mostly for friends in the past. I started playing in early age, but didn't start teaching until some high school friends wanted to learn a few things. I really enjoyed helping them break down a problem, I always had a very systems-approach. Recently, I had a female student that was learning pieces for her school's talent show. I generally choose to use Faber as a method book for all my beginning students, using the age appropriate track for each student ranging from too young to read yet to adult learners. I believe that both the lesson book and the theory books are highly important and necessary. Depending on the student and their wants and needs, other books for each level may be added. I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance.
