I like to get my students to a level at which they can actually make/play music first, using their current favorite genre of music. The sooner they can make sounds on the instrument that resemble something close to "music," the sooner they'll fall in love with the instrument. Once they have reached that level, we then dive in to music theory, guitar specific theory, sight-reading, and all of the other necessary areas of music that tend to deter most potential students.
