For someone just beginning the guitar, I typically use the 'Berkeley' A Modern Method for Guitar - Volume 1 by William Leavitt. This book works wonderfully for lessons due to the methodical pace of volume 1 working through several important keys and starting positions on the guitar, and even has great student/teacher duets to help beginning students with keeping time and sight-reading.
