I find that their methods for both kids and adults not only covers the basic fundamentals of music, but they are also able to make everything comprehensive and enjoyable. For guitar, I like to use Hal Leonard's basic guitar book for students focusing on popular music and basic guitar, and for classical guitar I like to use the Christopher Parkening Method. Read More

I approach teaching by working closely with each student to figure out their goals and interests. I introduce concepts gradually, building upon the foundation we have built in past lessons. I set realistic practice goals, understanding that we all have busy schedules. I usually assign 1-3 concepts for students to work on at home, at their own pace. Watching students grow is wonderful and immensely gratifying. I am a goal setter and overachiever so I like to work with the student to set goals that will not be discouraging. I believe that learning how to play an instrument/sing with others in an ensemble setting helps reinforce what we work on in the lesson. As a multi-instrumentalist, I enjoy finding songs we can eventually play together while implementing technique and structure. I like the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, for guitar. I also use scales, picks, fingerstyle methods, and backing tracks to help get the students up to speed on a song or a riff they'd like to learn. It's important to understand the background of music, so I tend to also teach students the structure of a 12-bar blues progression and relate it to songs of yesterday and today. I encourage each student to build a list of their favorite songs. This helps them to always have something new, and something to review. It is very rewarding to see my students being able to play one of their favorite songs from beginning to end. I also help my students create their own original songs when they are inspired to do so.
