At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. I believe setting goals and accomplishing them are important, so I support my students until the end. I am a woodwind specialist who has made a career out of performing in pit orchestras for Broadway musicals. I have performed at regional theaters in New York and Colorado and toured the United States and Canada. I'm actually very flexible with the methods or books for all of the instruments I teach. Generally, for the band instruments, the director picks the method book. Most of the modern ones are pretty good to get students started, so I'm fine sticking to the director's method of choice and gleaning all the musical gems we can from it.
