It is most important to me that each student is enjoying their time in their lessons and being motivated to practice and perform outside of lessons. I believe that while critique is crucial to improvement, acknowledging strengths and giving compliments is vital to strengthening a students self-esteem and getting them motivated to practice and thus perform well. I believe the most rewarding thing about being a teacher is seeing a student come into their lessons excited and passionate about their playing. One of the things I find encourages students to practice is to give them mini rewards when they successfully play a piece or etude, such as stickers or stamps. I usually start with the Rubank Elementary Method book. There are four books in the series and they are very comprehensive. Once the student progresses to the Intermediate book, I also add Selected Duets Volume 1. I have found that playing duets strengthens listening skills and intonation, plus they are fun! Solo and ensemble pieces are introduced as the student becomes more proficient and various performing opportunities begin to present themselves. Read More
