I'm a creative and motivated educator who loves sharing my passion for music with my students. I hold degrees in music performance from Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas at Austin. I've been teaching privately and in the public school system in Austin for 7 years. Performing and teaching are my life's work and sharing the experiences I've had with my students helps them realize how music can positively impact their life. Read More

For very young piano/keyboard students, lessons go more smoothly if they know right hand and left hand, count to 10 and know ABC's. They learn to read music almost immediately, and I give them the tools to be able to pick up any piece of music and play it independently. Regular performance opportunities are provided to show off acquired skills and progress of students and application of knowledge is encouraged through original composition. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method for Flute. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital program. For intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals. My teaching experience dates back to 2005, as I began teaching private English as a Second Language in both my home and students’ homes in Beijing, China. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for young students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for their studies. I’ve also found that a combination of different activity exercises can go a long way in helping students enjoy their studies and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

We like lessons to be fun and challenging. Sight reading abilities really help musicality and ability for spontaneity. Part of each lesson is spent on good posture, breathing and excellent practice methods. We slow down the difficult passages and get them played correctly. Attention to tone and a great armbiture are always kept in mind, as well as hand position and minimal movement as the songs and exercises are played. Read More

For piano beginning students, I usually start with the Alfred Book series. This is a really fun way for the piano students to grasp the fundamentals and learn how to independently move each finger at different times. As the student progresses, I try to find out what kind of style they enjoy playing and advise which books to purchase next. My goal as an educator is to develop a unique style and approach molded by each student in order to the gain the most success. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More
