I approach my teaching method with the perspective of a guided musical exploration. While I have certain methods and books that I rely on I tailor lessons individually to each students' style of learning and goals. I want lessons to be fun and engaging leaving the student inspired to practice and excited to attend the next lesson. At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability. Read More

My goal as a teacher is to help students cultivate a lifelong passion for music! To do this, I first identify a student's musical goals. These goals could be things like getting a superior rating at solo and ensemble, auditioning into an honor band, learning more about a genre of music, or just to have fun! My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. After this, I start to assign different songs and/or assignments that match the student's learning style and interest in music. Read More
