While I heavily stress learning good technique andreading notation, I think that drums need to be introduced with context. This makes the student aware of what the music needs from the drums and how it feels to play drums in an accompanying manner. For beginning students, I use a couple of different method books including one of my own. I also focus on what rhythm really is and try to get the student to develop timing skills and reading skills too. I have been studying drums for well over 17 years! I love playing, learning, and teaching drums. It's all I ever think about. I began studying Jazz drumming throughout high school, and have performed, toured, and recorded with many bands since. I have become locally acclaimed with my affiliation for local Utah music festivals such as Desert Rocks Music Festival, Powellpalooza, Uncle Uncanny's Summer Sessions, and Psych Lake City. In 2012 I toured heavily all over North America and Europe including Turkey and Greece with a Psychedellic rock band called Radio Moscow. Read More

I believe that my principal role as a teacher is to inspire. If I fail to inspire the student, none of the concepts or exercises I teach will bear any fruit. And so I ensure that our lessons consist of lots of musical moments with instruction, feedback, follow up, and accountability built into the lesson time at moments when it will be motivating and not intimidating. I treat the lesson time as if it was a piece of music. Read More
