I start beginners with the drum rudiments and chart reading. This gets them able to move their hands and feet for better coordination. After they have better coordination I introduce ear training which is playing along to their favorite songs. This teaches the student how toplay with a band. Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show.
