Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. The private lessons began with the local music store and when I finished their courses they led me to john sutton for lessons ,he played for the buffalo philharmonic.
