I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. I have experiences with both feldenchrist and Alexander technique to approach cello in a holistic way that allows the music to flow naturally without physical boundaries. Physical gestures must match musical ideas but are usually the first thing that is overlooked when trying to approach a musical idea. Perhaps most importantly, I make it a priority to include as much real music as possible from the start, so that the students experience musical playing early on. I believe that the cello can be a beneficial addition to anyones life, whether it is being played for recreation/therapy, to explore and enjoy great music, or to challenge oneself and build discipline through rigorous practice.
