My philosophy of teaching is that there is a base of knowledge and skills that a student must possess before a more personal journey in music can occur. I belive music is the universal language. It doesnt matter what type of music you play, the theory is all the same. When you learn a song, the theory should be learned as well. I like to give scales and a practical theory lesson each week, then transcribe a song for the student to learn that relates to the weeks lesson. Guitar: An exploration of a variety of genres with an emphasis on technique and precision. We will master scales, basic chords, and important chord structures. Lessons will include an introduction to sight-reading and music theory as well as playing by ear, soloing, and songwriting. Bass: Lessons will focus on technique and music theory. My teaching style is straightforward and practical, always emphasizing the goals of each student specifically. The benefits of reading and understanding sheet music as it relates to your instrument far outweigh those of simple tablature used for guitar and banjo etc. However, in some cases it is practical to use non-traditional forms of instruction.
