I have several tools that I use to get students playing music.  One of my favorite tools is the Music Flashcards made by Bastien.  Rather than teaching notes using an acronym like "every good boy deserves fudge" to teach notes, I use landmarks which get students to see the relationship between notes and allow them to read music with fluidity and ease.  I pair these flashcards with Music Tree book 1 and feel that they compliment each other very well. I have a "less talk, more play" approach to music. People learn instruments because they want to play music, and that is always the focus in my lessons. While some instructors incessantly talk about theory, history, and other music concepts, I prefer to keep the talking to a minimum and have my students play their instrument as much as possible. I am comfortable teaching out of various method books. I have primarily used Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings, as well as Alfred's Sound Innovations for Strings. I have also used All for Strings and Artistry in Strings. If a student has a method book already, then I will work with them out of that book. If not, then I like to start with my own supplemental activities (flash cards, worksheets, playing by rote, etc) and build up to using a book. Read More
