I have been teaching flute since 2006 in my home studio.  It began as being in the music intern for the beginning winds class that my high school had offered and the students who had picked flute had continued lessons with me after the class was over.  In 2013, I began teaching for Olga's Piano Studio as the private flute instructor.  I primarily teach classical music and tie in one or two styles of music that the student enjoys as well. For beginners the first sound is the most important basic thing for a horn player (woodwind or brass). For children I use easy melodies they remember. This is helpful so they won'tget bored or tired easily. There are important transitional mechanisms in the clarinet especially that have to be overcome before starting with the scales studies. As a grad student at Miami, Derek was a guest lecturer in Jazz Pedagogy courses and guest conducted the Frost Studio Jazz Band. He has been a member of the Jazz Education Network since 2013 and the International Trombone Association since 2014. I have taught for over twenty years to all ages and levels. I teach the fun way by teaching the student what they would like to know by tailoring each lesson to fit there personal goals, needs and questions. I've studied at Lamont School Of Music, music composition; classical and commercial. I've also been doing Music Production for twenty years as well. I am motivated to teach students all aspects of music. Each lesson focuses on scales and exercises, performance pieces, and musical creation. I graduated from St. Mary's college in 2006 with a BA of performing arts. I am currently playing with the Walnut Creek Concert Band and The Community Womens Orchestra.
