I have a very laidback, low-pressure approach - if you didn't practice, it's not the end of the world! I think back to my own days of taking lessons and remember how much more I improved in this type of environment, and how much more I loved the process. I started teaching when I was in high school, I began by teaching young students ranging from 5 years old to teenagers. As I started attending college, my students' age spectrum expanded into adults and even seniors. Through these experiences, I have learned to mold my teaching skills according to the students' needs and cater an enjoyable, and yet, challenging lesson. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. After their first solo piece, there will be room for expansion into different genres of music. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and is prepared to study, and I will guide them in my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
