It's a milestone that can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking, and my goal is to ensure they're well-prepared and confident when the time comes. When it comes to adult students, my teaching philosophy takes a somewhat different route. I place a significant emphasis on getting to know what makes each adult student tick, musically speaking. I find out what styles, genres, or artists ignite their passion for music. There are so many ways to approach music - via reading music, improvising, composing, playing by ear, and I make sure to include them all over the course of my lessons with students. I encourage students to bring songs that they are interested in learning, and also provide plenty of material to get them on their way to undersanding how to navigate both their instrument, and music. I usually use the Hal Leonard method for guitar students learning to read, and the Faber piano method for paino students. Read More

I provide a broad understanding of the instrument, with years of study to back it up, taking a conceptual, theoretical, technical and applicable approach, while stimulating the most important aspect: creativity. I get to the root of what the student needs to know eliminating excess, in order to speed up the learning process. Nothing originates from a strictly academic place, so I promote a natural free flowing environment, catered to the uniqueness of the individual in order to encourage study and inspire innovation. For chords we will work through some books that I've had great past success with in my lessons. It's a great way to start off with just 2 or 3 chords, and slowly add more chords and strumming patterns as we progress through the book. As we learn more chords, we eventually start incorporating these chords into our songs as well. For advanced students I sometimes focus more heavily on one particular aspect of a students playing if they desire that (for example; if the student is already proficient in rhythm we may move directly to soloing and music theory). *I do not force my students to learn notation as I've found it can be very discouraging (especially for children), but I can incorporate this into the lesson if it's desired by the parent or student. Students will likely begin in a method book of some form, and eventually will use supplementary material as needed. The method books for Younger students typically consists of 3 or more levels depending on their skill, while the method books for older students provide a good outline of the technique for the instrument. The supplements provide materials to develop musicianship and artistry through repertoire. This approach allows the lesson to be tailored to the students' overall purpose for taking the lessons.
