I am a diverse and skilled lead and rhythm guitarist. I play Rock, Jazz, Blues, and Balkan music. I started my journey with Eric Clapton and George Harrison in 2004. I graduated with honors from the Contemporary Music Program at Santa Fe University of Art & Design in 2015. I played lead guitar in a progressive rock power trio called Get Safe for three years. My most current project is one that fuses jazz guitar and electronic dance music, which I've titled SOZN. My passion for music's functionality as well as its therapeutic and experimental nature is what has drawn me to a career in music. I look forward to meeting you and passing on what I know to improve your musical skills!
I've been teaching and tutoring guitar and music theory since I was in college, starting in 2013. After school, I continued instructing. Starting with the first lesson, I'll learn what the student is interested in, and build a curriculum that will reflect that interest. I've found that many students need encouragement instead of judgement to feel motivated to practice and improve at their instruments. I believe regular practice is key to understanding the instrument. In addition to understanding, it will become more fun! I started playing because I thought it would be fun, and I was right. 14 years after I started playing, I've started a career in music.
For beginning students and children, I'll start off with a combination of Mel Bay's Modern Guitar 1 and the book my teacher authored and self-published; The Guitar Workbook by Mike Jerant. Once they have a grasp of the open chords, we can start learning songs they're interested in. The same goes for adults, but we'll focus more on their goals from the beginning, and I'll tailor my lessons to include exercise and theory as it relates to my student's musical interests. My lessons are fun and informative. I understand that every student will have different challenges, and this is why I will teach every student differently.
My approach is laid-back, but not too laid back! I want to teach my students as much about music as I can, but I also recognize that every musician travels their own path at their own pace. Guitarists are no different, and part of what makes the guitar so special is the flexibility one has in learning what he or she wants to learn, as well as its prevalence in all genres of what we call Western pop music. Every lesson, I set "homework" for my students, which we review the following lesson. By finding what motivates my students, I am able to teach them how they need to be taught.
I'm keeping Trevor for as long as he will have me as a student. I have learned so much more than I could dream of on my own, even with friends and all the goodies on-line. I really am starting to feel like a guitar player now thanks to Trevor.
Trevor has been my teacher for 2 years after I relocated away from my original teacher. During our first lesson he had me adjust my posture so that my shoulder was not affecting my playing. His knowledge about technique helped me smooth out my playing. I recommend him for anyone who wants to improve their playing as well as for beginners. He loves to show people how to make music.
Trevor explains concepts I had trouble understanding on my own, or that other teachers had trouble explaining.
I just recently got into guitar and Trevor is the best teacher. He is extremely patient with me and helps me get through things that I tend to find difficult. If you need a teacher who is patient. makes learning fun, and calmly explains how to do something he is your guy!
