The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. Once an adequate amount of fundamental material has been grasped, I like to have the student select songs or pieces that they already know of and learn to play simple translations of them that I will prepare. For intermediate students: heavy rigor with more complicated exercise in the form of etudes (piano), vocal runs (voice), and picking exercises (bass/guitar) is encouraged, with an introduction to more complicated music theory and harmony. Now that I am building my own woodwind studio, I want to emphasize learning the basics, as I lacked that in my own early schooling. Music fundamentals are the building blocks of successful musicians. I am somewhat lenient with my teaching style. I always give every student work to practice and improve upon for their next lesson. However, I am a firm believer that keeping a student's interest in music is best accomplished by allowing them to move at their own pace.
