As a child of an adult learner who took lessons in guitar and voice, I understand the distinction between adult and younger learners. The pacing, goal setting and choice of materials and resources is important to keep interest and spark inspiration to practice and maintain growth. I have been teaching young clarinetists privately for nearly 8 years, and more recently began working as a clinician and teaching masterclasses at local schools. I prioritize curating diverse resources for teaching and performing, and am frequently trying new technique books and contemporary music for myself and my students. As a performer, I have made great progress through participating in chamber music, and so I encourage my own students to collaborate with their peers and frequently will play chamber music in lessons. I began teaching in 2000, and since then have taught saxophones, flute, clarinet, improvisation, chord theory, piano / keyboard, basic music understanding to young children in a classroom setting, and coached worship teams and group seminars to all ages. It is a great joy to see students excel and expand as they take what they have learned into their own lives! For beginning students, whether they are children or adults, I begin instruction with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book for Clarinet. Once they have made their way through that book, I move onto the Rubank Beginner or Intermediate Method book, depending on how they have progressed. Around this time, I introduce my younger students to solo repertoire for clarinet. For adult students, I try to gauge their interest and instruct accordingly, whether they are performing in their church or community band, or simply playing for pleasure. Read More
