My method for teaching is usually based mainly on repertoire. I use a series of books called the Neil A. KJOS Piano Library. In every lesson we will work on and practice two to four pieces of music from different genres and time periods. For beginner students, we will use elements in the music to learn theory and technique. For beginning students, I typically start with a Sound Before Symbol Method. That is, we learn to get to know the instrument before adding sheet music and theory. Every student's learning track is individualized- So if you want to learn pop music, I will arrange that for the flute! If classical is what you are interested in, I will bring in the Bach Partitas.
