To become free as an improviser requires having a vocabulary in the particular language that you want to communicate with, and also the confidence to do so. So much of improvisation is negotiation with your fellow musicians. I love to help students how to be active and responsive in the musical conversations with others by improvisation games, call and responses, leading vs. accompanying, and more. Apart from building up the students' confidence, and their individual musical voices, their vocabulary, and technical skills, it is my highest goal to equip students to bring joy, beauty, and depth to any musical performance. For all ages I like to begin with a skills test. Where they show me where they currently stand with their instrument. From there I refer to books by Trevor Wye to give students a strong fundamental basis in tone, technique, articulation, intonation/vibrato, and breathing/scales. From there the lessons would be tailored to where the student wants to go with their learning. I started teaching in my early 20's and have taught for over 20 years. Nothing beats seeing a student's reaction when they've learned something and can successfully implement it.
