Students are really the cornerstone of my teaching style. Many teachers use a "one size fits all" methodology to their students. By tailoring my teaching to my students specific talents, they will be very eager to learn! Students all have different learning styles, and different concepts they struggle with. I use students' learning styles to develop the skills to learn concepts. Learning each and individual technique does indeed work. Instead of berating my students to practice, my students practice because they want to practice. My students often tell me what they have been working on from their own reading and listening without being asked, and give me suggestions on what they want to learn in their lessons. I create intrinsic motivation through using the most successful teaching practices, engaging curiosity and interests, creating and improvising music with students, building relationships between the student and other musicians, and just simply having fun! Depending on the personality of each student, I adjust my expectations and decide how tolerant or strict I should be. I truly believe that a teacher needs to view each student as a unique individual with unique needs and abilities, and adjust the teaching methods and ways of communicating the material accordingly. The violin is something that should be fascinating and interesting. I think everyone can have their own learning style, and I try to be flexible in that and keep the violin a fun and entertaining instrument to learn. The violin is about consistency, but the way in which it happens is up to the student. I like to keep the focus of lessons on the development of artistry and fun of the music, but am stern when it comes to encouraging students to practice and reach their full potential. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace.
