My cello instruction is separated by levels and books. Level 0-1 is in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Level 1-2 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 1, as well as sheet music and books outside of that method book. Level 2-3 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 2 and sheet music, and 3+ will be Rick Mooney's Thumb Position books. I decide my methodology depending on the age, skill level, and individual goals and interests of each student. For very young pre-school students, I'd encourage them to learn the music by ear (Suzuki method) and through repetition in various ways. For older school-aged students I strongly believe in the importance of note-reading and I might use the Essential elements method books, that introduce the musical notation and theory concepts in a way appropriate for people with no prior musical training. Although my formal education is in the sciences, I am a passionate violinist/fiddler who loves sharing my love of music and theater through performance and working with students. I've played violin since the age of four, learning through the Suzuki Method, and continuing through the summers in music camps. My teaching experience began when I was in high school, and has continued throughout my higher education. Most of my teaching experience is with children ages 4-15, however I am comfortable teaching students of all ages and of varying skill levels. I am very interested in music pedagogy, and have taking a number of pedagogical courses within the last couple years, so I am able to come up with a number of approaches when taking on a new student, each approach catering to individual student needs. I am a member of the Symphonicity Orchestra in Virginia Beach, VA and the Georgia Philharmonic Orchestra in Atlanta, GA. I have studied under the direction of The Hampton Roads Chamber Players and The Bay Youth Orchestra in Norfolk, VA. Currently performs several times a year at The Biltmore House in Asheville, NC and several other events in the Atlanta Metro area.
