For any beginner musician, I find it is very important to have a general idea of the most basic level of theory. A student should know how the notes relate to each other and why. For beginning students, I like to start with some starting note learning drills on paper or going through some beginner books. I am a firm believer in that the more a student practices reading music, the easier it will come. I realize that some students learn music better by ear, and I will work to develop that skill alongside the essentials of reading the music on paper. As they progress, I hope to introduce different kinds of solo music in order to teach different skills and techniques that are involved, while still keeping the music fun and accomplishing the goals that the student wants to accomplish. For advanced students we could use anything from method books to cds to ear training and transposition to bring out the best in the learner. Read More

My lessons will typically begin with a series of questions. Basically, what is the goal of the student. Whether it is to just relax at home after work, or school or perform solo piano at a coffee shop, or learn songs off of the internet or a method book of their preference, I encourage students to be patient, diligent and to never ever skip a day of practice. I believe in exercises (Hanon, Scales, Arpeggios) in order to strenghten the muscles of the hands, and develop a proper technique. Read More
