As a teacher, I have learned the last 4 years that you can't expect a student to just know something right away. It takes time, and students have to take it at their own pace. Sometimes, you have to differentiate instruction often, until the student starts to understand something. So, I find it is important to be student-centered and focus on the goals they can achieve, little at a time. My methods vary on the student and subject. Beginning students will typically focus more on technical pieces of music to improve on certain aspects of a few pieces to perform. More advanced students will still practice technical parts of their music, but less time will be spent on it during a lesson. Advanced level students will spend more time on repertoire and performance. I am passionate a motivated while also being able to teach all levels of saxophone and clarinet. I have both a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming in Saxophone Performance. I have played both saxophone and clarinet for over twenty years. I have taught privately and in group lessons at the novice, intermediate and collegiate levels. I strive to be a balanced teacher that engages the students musical interests while also setting a high (but patient) bar for technical facility and discipline.
