When considering texts and books for students, I believe that Hal Leonard texts are a standard and acceptable form of teaching. For students who may have personalized needs, there are accompanying tools that can be of use, and I try to use those as necessary. Beginning with any student at any level, I first try to engage with them on a purely audio level. By interacting with their instrument from a simply aural perspective, I can get a sense of how they respond to sound; for example, how they attempt to find patterns on a keyboard, or how responsive they are to consonance against dissonance. My entire life, I have been dedicated to the study of music. From my early childhood education to present day gigs and songwriting, music has always been a centerpiece of my life. I have performed all around the world and am incredibly grateful for the learning experiences I have been blessed with. I've been teaching students young and old for over 10 years how to improve on their instrument or in their field and achieve their goals. To me the most exciting thing about teaching one-on-one lessons is the ability to individualize each lesson to the particular students' needs, abilities and desires. I want my students to get out of their lessons what they want to get out of them, so I love working with students who have a good idea of what they are aiming for and are willing to work hard to get there. In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! I am skilled at reading a student's attributes and building upon their strengths. I like to take the child's interests into consideration when determining the best approach. I believe that there are many avenues to learning music and realize that charts, scales and other traditional approaches may not work everyone especially for someone who senses music in colors or some other unique manner.
