My teaching style is based on each student's needs. Some students like to learn at a fast pace and others like to go slower. I listen carefully and ask questions, basing instruction on what creates success. My approach is to make learning fun. I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie. I spent 2 years on the road with a musical theater tour company, performing various woodwinds in the pit orchestras for the musicals Flashdance, Elf, and Shrek, and I also spent 4 weeks on a holiday tour with MN-based pianist Lorie Line and her Pop Chamber Orchestra (playing 6 different woodwinds). I currently freelance in a variety of bands/styles around the Twin Cities, including the Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra, Soul Shack, Machinery Hill, and the Brass Barn Polka Band, as well as in pit orchestras for various major local theaters. For beginning students, I like to focus for the first few weeks on playing scales and songs without written music, and I continue to incorporate learning by at any level. When I begin using written music I use the Accent on Achievement or Essential Elements method (I am also comfortable with other standard elementary methods and would be happy to use whatever method a student's band director is using), which is a good place to start whether or not the student already reads music.
