Instruments: Piano, Organ, Synthesizer, Keyboard

My methods are totally dependent on what my student's needs and goals are. For younger beginners I like to use a combination of learning the basics (rhythm, reading music, scales) with music that is familiar to them (theme song from a favorite show or movie, favorite or familiar song). I think it's important to teach children that they can begin to make music that they recognize early on without years and years of study. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Voice

I began teaching private lessons back in undergrad. I found that I really enjoy getting to know someone one-on-one, and I think I'm particularly effective at figuring out how to communicate knowledge, create art and inspire on that level! The experience of my students has run the gamut; I've taught 5-year old and 65-year old beginners, I've taught students who already have an undergrad degree in music. I have taught people who are actively performing, and expectant mothers who want to sing lullabies to their babies. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Voice, Bass Guitar, Ukulele, Conga, Latin Percussion, Keyboard, Electric Guitar, Djembe, Acoustic Guitar

As a classically trained vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, I have been instructing for 10 years, alongside my activities in performance. I have been instructing students and colleagues within the University setting, as well as in private lessons. I encourage students to listen to music and to dive into their respective sounds as much as they can because immersion is key to understanding how to embody their sound. If a student is missing that piece to their musical character, then that is where I come in, to stoke the flame, and focus it. Read More

For beginning students, the first things to learn are how to hold the violin. Setup and posture are the most important steps to avoid developing bad habits and the possibility of getting injured. Upon learning the basics of how to hold the violin and the bow is learning how to read music and sing music. If a student knows the basic setup of the violin/piano and knows how to read music then I would start them on repertoire fitted to their level. Read More

Instruments: Piano, Accordion

I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I like to demonstrate how to play- usually I count while the student plays, which helps with the beats. We may sing together or separate the note names or the song words. Every music phase requires different input. Students who struggle with note reading, get additional note reading and writing books. Depending on music difficulty, I prefer to learn the right hand melody first, then left hand. Read More
