For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. For beginning piano students, I started with the Piano Adventures Series unless they show a higher than usual natural ability. If I see that are above average, I will switch them to the Modern Course for Piano by John Thompson. Along with these method books, I introduce solo music from classical to modern music. If the student is learning the trumpet or another brass instrument, we begin with Standards of Excellence by Bruce Pearson. Read More
