For piano students, I like to use the Alfred Books. They have books for young beginners, older beginners, through adults. The books also have songs the students know, and additional books with a variety of styles. They are written in a clear, manner that explains new skills and moves slowly so students won't get discouraged. I also add music for the seasons or in the style the students like often written by myself. Read More

For all my beginning students, we start with the Essential Elements book 1 for the fundamentals. Depending on a student's music-reading ability, we can jump to book 2 or a more advanced book, though the ability to read music is not the end-all-be-all of determining skill level. Two books I find myself using with my intermediate and advanced students are the Wohlfahrt etudes and Trott's Melodious Double-Stops. I tend to write a lot of my own warm-ups and exercises for students depending on their individual needs, especially if the student is more interested in pop, rock, or country as opposed to classical. When it comes to a teaching method for piano, it depends on the age and the musical experience of the student. Whether my student is taking lessons in piano or voice, I always teach in a theoretical manner, as well as a practical one. I feel it is important for every musician to learn music theory, as well as their instrument. That said, if I had to choose one method, it would be the All-In-One series from Hal Leonard. Read More
