Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing. In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I enjoy watching students develop a passion for music! It is important that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. For example, beginning students who work from the basic piano books will have the realistic goal of working on one piece per week, learning the fundamentals as we progress. I love seeing a student succeed, but what I love more than that is seeing that the student understands it is their effort that has resulted in their success. It is hard to put in the practice time sometimes, and it is hard to always feel like you're progressing, so while I may need to sometimes guide a student into better choices (whether fingerings on the piano, or picking patterns on a guitar or banjo), I will always try to find some aspect of their current ability to compliment.
